Trail of the Dime Novel Reviews

Fiction: Trails of the Dime Novel by Terry Burns
Posted on: Apr 23, 2005 - 03:18 PM by Cheryl McCann

Terry Burns takes the reader to the wild West in the late 1800s with tales of delightful exaggeration and a historical aspect. Meet Rick Dayton, also known as "Texas Jack Hammer", who sometimes experiences the adventure and then writes about it.

Rick Dayton is an author who writes about his adventures over land and sea as he is traveling around the West and searching for his next tale. He delights people he meets talking about his writing, recording in his journal, and interviewing his characters and getting their opinions.

His characters help mold Rick as a writer to make sure he gets his "facts straight" or that his plot and characters are "manufactured" correctly. He finds his muse through his entertainment for his dime novel, "a small publication."

Opinion by Reviewer:

I particularly like the references to Texas, my home state. It is entertaining and humorous with a wonderful Christian message.

Trails of the Dime Novel is an unusual Western, about a young man in the late 1800's who set out west to write dramatic stories that would capture the imagination of the reading populace, and found himself living them instead. Mortal peril, the threat of thieves, hostile Indians, and the challenges of surviving and no man's land with few laws and less enforcement make for an exciting succession of dangerous adventures that provide the would-be writer with source material to craft popular stories beyond his wildest dreams. A good, old-fashioned romp through the Old West, resonating with the memories of classic cowboy movies, stories, tall tales and culture.

Fallen Angel Reviews

This is a fun and adventure-filled novel set in the old west during the 1800’s. Rick Dalton is a young northern gentleman working as a writer for one of the northern newspapers. His ability to paint pictures with his words is totally unappreciated by his editor. Rick’s adventure begins when his Uncle Edgar dies leaving him a hefty inheritance that comes with an interesting condition. The only way Rick gets to claim the inheritance is if he gives up his newspaper job and starts to write the stories his uncle is sure he is capable of. Nervous and excited Rick boards a train heading west, changes his name to Texas Jack and sets out in search of stories to write.

If you have ever wondered how the legends of the old west became legends then this is the book for you. Terry Burns gives you twenty complete adventures in one novel. Although the book is fiction, the historical references are true making this a great way to learn a little history while having fun. Texas Jack is such a loveable character, and he made me laugh so hard a couple of times that I had to stop reading and catch my breath. I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story. If you happen to have a younger reader in the family feel free to share this book with them. Trails of the Dime Novel is just good clean fun.

Trails of the Dime Novel is a delightful new book, especially for younger readers.  As Rick Dayton heads West to write the little books that were so popular at the turn of the century, little did he know he would not be writing the adventures, but living them.  Each chapter resulted in another of the small tomes, full of humor, and fascinating tales.  It's a great read even for adults.

I was caught from the time I read the excerpt. The book was a very delightful read. Each story was witty and charming. I could see see Rick coming into his own out there experiencing life and he made it all seem so easy - even his Sunflower bronc riding. I highly recommend this book.

Terry: Thanks so much for getting me a NEW copy of your NEW book. I read
half of it last night and found myself chuckling and laughing. I love it!
Your hero is at once naive and everyman of epic proportions. Keep up the
good work.
